The New GM: More Than Just a Catch Phrase?

Newly minted GM CEO Fritz Henderson talked a lot about “The New GM” in his press conference today. And he dropped some revealing lines about what that phrase really means. For example: “I don’t view size as leadership.” That turns a century of corporate tradition on its head. GM’s internal mindset has always been about size; about being the biggest, most powerful player in the automotive industry; about having more brands, more models, more dealers, more market share than anyone else.

According to Henderson, the focus of The New GM is right-sizing the business as fast as possible. More dealers are to be axed, bringing the total GM dealer network down to about 3600 nationwide, more than 3000 dealers fewer than existed two years ago. Henderson says the company is aiming to stabilize market share at 18 to 18.5 percent market share — ending the long, long slide from a peak of 54 percent in 1954 — and to break even on an EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) basis in a market of just 10 million units.

Henderson said reducing GM’s line up to four core brands (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac) and fewer nameplates means the company’s product line up will be properly resourced and better focused. “The days of 15 launches, and counting on five or six of them being hits are gone.” So, too, are the days of over-reliance on gas-guzzling full-size trucks and SUVs to drive profits: “We are assuming we’ll see higher oil prices in the future. 2008 taught us economic growth will drive up oil prices.”

GM, along with the other Detroit automakers, has traditionally pushed back on government mandated fuel economy targets. But the national 35.5 mpg average by 2016 announced by President Obama represents a “watershed” agreement, said Henderson, as GM no longer faces the cost and complexity of meeting additional standards mandated by states such as California under the guise of regulating CO2 emissions. “We have never missed a fuel efficiency guideline,” claimed Henderson, “and we won’t now.”

Other key points from today’s press conference:

* It is likely to be some time before the government will be able to reduce its shareholding in GM: “We all have an interest in creating a market for GM shares, but this is a question of years, not months.”

* Bankruptcy was never the preferred option: “We thought we could deal with the operational side of the business outside bankruptcy. The tricky part was dealing with the capital structure.  What this does is permanently address problems that we were unable to address until today.”

* China is critical to The New GM, but that doesn’t mean GM will start wholesale import of Chinese-made cars: “Our business in China grows at a torrid pace. But one of our bedrock principles is we build where we sell.”

* The chief restructuring officer (turnaround specialist and Obama appointee Al Koch) will be tasked with winding down the “old” GM: “He won’t have a role in running GM.”

President Obama made the point this morning that the federal government has no interest in running GM, and no interest in telling GM what sort of vehicles it should build. The President was clear his administration’s main goal in saving GM from liquidation was to prevent the massive economic fallout that would result from the catastrophic failure of a large portion of America’s auto manufacturing sector. Nothing more. Nothing less.

“There are no second chances, and we won’t need one,” Henderson said in his closing remarks today. Wrong, and wrong. This is GM’s second chance, and oh boy, was it needed. Henderson and his management team therefore need to remember just one simple mantra as they now race to turn The New GM — smaller, leaner, more focused — into a viable 21st century automaker: Don’t blow it.

Henderson Writes: Corvette Safe, Buick Turbo is Back, No Chevy G8

DETROIT – Even after bankruptcy and government ownership, General Motors won’t abandon the rear-wheel-drive, V-8-powered Corvette. “My wonderful baby is my 2005 Corvette coupe,” CEO Fritz Henderson wrote in his first online chat after filing Chapter 11. “We have more in store for the future and this iconic brand will retain its powerful place within the new GM.” Of course, online, that was all in lower-case letters.

Henderson also confirmed plans for a turbo-four-powered Buick LaCrosse. The 2010 LaCrosse goes on sale with a standard, 255-horsepower 3.0-liter gas direct-injection V-6 and optional 280-horse 3.6-liter GDI engine.

GM has “plans for a performance four-cylinder Ecotec” LaCrosse some time after the start of production. The LaCrosse’s exterior styling is based on the 2006 Shanghai motor show Buick Invicta coupe concept, which was built with a 255-horsepower, 2.0-liter gas direct-injection turbo four. Even its torque is impressive enough for a large midsize like the LaCrosse. At 220 pound-feet, it would be between the 3.0’s 211 and the 3.6’s 261 pound-feet.

If GM can get a turbo Buick to market quickly, it will trump resurgent Ford Motor Company. Ford’s gas direct-injected, turbocharged EcoBoost priority has been on V-6s as V-8 alternatives. GM has no production V-6 turbos ready, but it has the jump on gas direct-injection turbo fours. A 1.4-liter turbo four in the 2011 Chevy Cruze replaces the 2.2-liter naturally aspirated four in the (non-SS) Cobalt, and that engine could become a pillar of GM’s fuel economy strategy.

Ford’s bright spot these last few dismal months for the industry has been the midsize Fusion, and four-cylinder take-rates on the Fusion and Chevy Malibu have been growing to Camry/Accord levels since last year’s $4-per-gallon gas. Can a heart-of-the-market midsize car get compact-car fuel mileage and V-6 performance with a GDI turbo four? Looks like GM will find out before Ford does.

Henderson also gave a one word answer to the question of whether the Pontiac G8 GXP could live on as a Chevy or an entry-level Cadillac. “No.” If the question had added Buick, the answer would still be the same.

The GM CEO took questions from the public, employees and journalists, and Henderson promised future chats. An employee identified as Jane asked, “how can we focus on growing the new GM with more job losses hanging over our heads?

“My simple answer is to get the pain behind us as we go through bankruptcy and 363 … we must spend time on our new products, customers and building brands. It has been my experience that managing problems and restructuring consumes time, actually oversubscribes time.”

So get back to work, Jane.

The Lamborghini Murci?lago is a sports car produced by Italian automaker Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. and designed by Luc Donckerwolke. It was introduced in 2002 as the successor to the Diablo. The Murci?lago is a two-door, two-seat coup?. To celebrate the company’s 40 years in operation, 50 special edition Murci?lagos were built during the autumn of 2003. An open-top version called the Murci?lago Roadster was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The roadster features similar performance to the coup? with a more aggressive rear flank, as well as a considerably higher price tag.

In 2006 the Murci?lago’s engine was replaced by a stronger 6.5-liter engine and the car’s name was changed to Murci?lago LP640. For the 2007 model year Lamborghini did the same with the roadster model, which is now called Murci?lago LP640 Roadster. Both versions received a minor facelift.
